Panic Attack Therapy in Mumbai

Panic Attack Therapy in Mumbai: Online & In-Person Counselling

Experiencing a racing heart, difficulty breathing, or an overwhelming sense that something is wrong? Panic attacks can be frightening, especially when they seem to come out of nowhere. At Kare Counselling, our psychologists provide compassionate, culturally informed, and evidence-based therapy to help you understand your experiences, manage panic symptoms, and feel more confident navigating everyday life.

What Is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear or discomfort that can trigger powerful physical and emotional symptoms. It can happen when you feel stressed or overwhelmed, but it can also occur during ordinary moments when there is no obvious reason to feel afraid.

Panic attacks can be particularly distressing because they often feel unpredictable. You might worry about when the next one will happen, become more aware of physical sensations, or start avoiding situations where you fear experiencing another attack.

If panic attacks are affecting your sense of safety or making everyday activities more difficult, therapy can help you understand what's happening and find ways to manage these experiences.

What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like?

Panic attacks can feel intensely physical, which is part of what makes them so frightening. Everyone experiences them differently, but you might notice:

  • A racing or pounding heartbeat
  • Chest tightness or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath or a feeling that you cannot breathe properly
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint
  • Sweating, chills, or trembling
  • Tingling or numbness in your hands, feet, or face
  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Feeling detached from your body or surroundings

Panic attacks often reach their peak within minutes and gradually subside. However, the experience can feel much longer when you are frightened by what is happening in your body. The fear of experiencing another panic attack can also significantly impact your daily routines, relationships, and decisions.

You don't need to experience all of these difficulties to seek support. If panic attacks are affecting your confidence, independence, or quality of life, speaking to a psychologist can be a helpful place to start.

Therapy Approaches We Use for Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be understood and managed with the right support. Therapy can help you make sense of your symptoms, explore what may be contributing to your experiences, and change the ways you respond to panic.

At Kare Counselling, we take an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from different therapeutic modalities to create a space that is tailored to your individual needs, experiences, and goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Exploring how your thoughts, physical sensations, and behaviours interact, and helping you recognise and gradually interrupt the panic cycle.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Learning to respond differently to difficult thoughts and physical sensations, rather than allowing the fear of panic to determine your choices.

Mindfulness-based approaches: Developing greater awareness of bodily sensations and anxious thoughts without immediately interpreting them as signs of danger.

Exposure-based approaches: Where appropriate, gradually and collaboratively working with feared sensations or situations to reduce avoidance and build confidence.

Trauma-informed care: Exploring how past experiences, prolonged stress, or a sense of unsafety may shape your responses to anxiety and panic.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is simply a chance to talk, get to know your therapist, and share what brings you to therapy. It is a safe, confidential space where your therapist will explore your history, evaluate your symptoms, and build a personalised treatment plan. Therapy sessions typically last 45 minutes and are available both in person at our Opera House clinic in Mumbai and online. You don't need to have everything figured out before you come in. You can simply start where you are.
