Therapy for International Students

Therapy for International Students: Online & In-Person Counselling

Moving to another country for education can bring new opportunities, but adjusting to life away from home can also feel difficult. You may be managing academic expectations, living independently, building new relationships, or adjusting to a different culture while staying connected to family back home.

For some students, these changes can lead to loneliness, homesickness, anxiety, family pressure, or uncertainty about where they belong. Therapy can offer a private and non-judgemental space to understand these experiences and work through what feels difficult.

At Kare Counselling, our counselling psychologists offer culturally sensitive support to international students through online and in-person sessions, depending on their circumstances and location.

Therapy for International Students

Therapy for international students provides a space to explore the emotional and personal challenges of living or studying away from home. This may include homesickness, loneliness, anxiety, academic stress, family expectations, relationships, or questions around identity and belonging.

Therapy can help you better understand what you are experiencing and develop ways of navigating these challenges that feel appropriate for you.

What Challenges Can Show Up While Studying Abroad

Living away from home can affect your emotional well-being, relationships, studies, and sense of identity.

Homesickness and Loneliness

You may miss family, friends, familiar routines, or find it difficult to build meaningful connections in a new environment.

Academic Pressure and Anxiety

Different academic expectations, exams, career concerns, or pressure to succeed can leave you feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Cultural Adjustment

Differences in communication, social expectations, routines, and everyday life can sometimes leave you feeling uncertain or out of place.

Family Expectations and Identity

You may feel pressure to meet family expectations while also trying to understand your own needs, choices, identity, and sense of belonging.

Therapy Approaches We Use

There is no single approach that works for every international student. Your therapist will tailor therapy to your experiences, concerns, and goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT can help you work through unhelpful thought patterns related to anxiety, academic pressure, self-doubt, and adjustment.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT can help you make space for difficult thoughts and emotions while staying connected to your values and personal priorities.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Mindfulness-based approaches can help you become more aware of thoughts, emotions, and stress without automatically reacting to them.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is a chance to discuss what you have been experiencing in a safe and confidential space. Your therapist may explore your experience of living or studying abroad, relationships, academic pressures, family expectations, homesickness, or other concerns that are affecting your well-being.

You can also discuss what you would like to understand or work through, whether that involves managing anxiety, adjusting to a new environment, dealing with loneliness, or navigating expectations from yourself and others.

There is no pressure to have everything figured out before therapy begins.

Sessions are 45 minutes long and available online or in person at our Charni Road clinic in Mumbai.
